How to use Image to Text (OCR)

  1. 1Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image, or a scanned PDF.
  2. 2Pick the language of the text. For a PDF, choose all pages (up to 20) or a range.
  3. 3Press Extract text. The first time, your browser downloads the OCR engine and language data from ToolSolvo.
  4. 4Proofread the result in the box, correct any mistakes, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.

Good to know

OCR (optical character recognition) turns a picture of text into real text. ToolSolvo uses Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, compiled to run inside your browser. Your file is not uploaded: the engine and its language data are downloaded from this site (about 4 MB for the engine and 3 MB for English, or 1 MB for Urdu) and the reading happens on your device. Nothing is saved in your browser’s storage; your browser’s normal cache may keep the engine files, so later runs usually start faster.

What to expect

  • OCR makes mistakes. Always proofread, especially numbers, names, amounts and punctuation. Clear, straight, well-lit printed text works best.
  • Handwriting is usually not recognised reliably. Tables, columns, forms and complex layouts come out as plain lines of text; the layout, fonts and images are not kept.
  • Urdu: Naskh-style printed Urdu (as used by many websites and Windows fonts) can work well. Nastaliq, the usual style for Urdu books and newspapers, is often misread, with words joined or letters wrong.
  • Only English and Urdu are offered, because they are the languages bundled and tested here.
  • If a PDF already contains selectable text (it isn’t a scan), OCR isn’t needed: the tool tells you, and PDF to Word gets the original text exactly.

Limits

  • Images up to 20 MB and PDFs up to 50 MB. iPhone HEIC photos need to be saved as JPG first.
  • Up to 20 PDF pages per run; choose a page range for longer documents.
  • Very large images and pages are scaled to about 12 megapixels, which is plenty for printed text.
  • A page that takes longer than 90 seconds is stopped and reported. You can cancel at any time.
