Good to know
- To JPG: JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the colour you choose (white by default). You are told when this happened.
- To PNG: lossless and keeps transparency, but photos become much larger files.
- To WebP: usually the smallest files and keeps transparency. Most modern browsers support it, but some older programs and upload forms do not.
- Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail the JPG already lost; it only changes how the pixels are stored.
The pixel size stays the same. Phone photos are turned the right way up, and metadata such as camera details and location is not copied. HEIC, GIF, TIFF and other formats are not supported: export HEIC photos as JPG on your phone first.
Conversion runs in your browser; your images are not uploaded.
