How to use PDF to Word

  1. 1Choose a PDF that contains selectable text (you can highlight words in a PDF reader).
  2. 2Click Convert to Word and wait while each page is read.
  3. 3Download the .docx file and open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
  4. 4Check the document and adjust the layout where needed.

Good to know

A PDF records where each piece of text sits on the page, not where paragraphs begin and end. This tool rebuilds paragraphs from those positions. The result is editable text, not a copy of the original layout.

Carried over

  • Text in reading order for single-column pages
  • Paragraphs, and headings recognised from larger font sizes
  • Bold and italic, where the PDF’s font names show them
  • Page breaks between the original pages

Not carried over

  • Images, charts, drawings, headers and footers as separate elements
  • Tables (their text comes through as lines), columns and exact positions
  • Original fonts, colours, links and form fields

Multi-column pages may come out in the wrong reading order. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text rather than text, and PDF to Word does not do OCR (text recognition), so it cannot convert them. To read the text from a scan, use the separate Image to Text (OCR) tool, which lets you copy the text or download it as a .txt file; it does not create a searchable PDF or a Word document. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.

The conversion runs in your browser; your PDF is not uploaded. To go the other way, use Word to PDF.
