Good to know
ToolSolvo only uses two techniques, both of which keep Urdu readable after copying:
- Kashida (tatweel), the stroke Urdu and Arabic writing use to stretch the join between letters. It is only added between letters that already join, never after letters such as ا د ر و ے, so no letter changes shape.
- Symbols around the text or between words. They are symmetric, because in right-to-left text the first symbol appears on the right.
Copying keeps the characters, not the font. The app you paste into shows the text in its own font. Most phones and apps use a Naskh-style font, where kashida shows clearly. Nastaliq fonts (including the one used on this site) don’t draw kashida at all: the text still reads correctly, it just isn’t stretched.
Styles we left out
- “Fancy font” letters (mathematical Arabic symbols): Unicode’s decorative Arabic letters are separate, non-joining characters with no Urdu letters such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, ں or ے, so words fall apart into single letters.
- Fixed letter shapes (presentation forms): Hard-coding initial/medial/final shapes looks right in one font but breaks searching, copying and joining in others.
- Strike-through, underline and other combining overlays: They collide with Urdu dots and diacritics and often show as empty boxes.
- Spaced-out letters: Putting spaces or joiners between Urdu letters breaks the joins between them.
- Upside-down, small-caps and bubble letters: These only exist for Latin letters; there are no Urdu equivalents.
