How things are counted
  • Words are separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks and must contain a letter or digit. Punctuation stuck to a word (ہے۔) does not add a word; punctuation on its own (۔ or -) is not a word.
  • Characters are the characters you see: a letter with a zer, zabar or pesh counts once. Spaces and line breaks are included.
  • Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
  • Lines include blank lines. A line break at the very end starts a new, empty line.
  • Urdu is sometimes typed without a space after letters such as ا, د or ر. Those words look separate but are counted as one.

How to use Urdu Word & Character Counter

  1. 1Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. 2Read the counts for words, characters with and without spaces, and lines.
  3. 3Open “How things are counted” if you need to match another tool’s rules.

Good to know

Different programs count Urdu differently, especially characters with diacritics, so ToolSolvo states its rules:

  • A word is anything between spaces or line breaks that contains a letter or a digit. Repeated spaces do not create extra words. ہے۔ is one word; a full stop (۔) on its own is not a word.
  • A character is what you see as one character: دِل has 2 characters even though the zer is stored separately. Some programs count the zer too and show 3.
  • Lines count every line, blank ones included.
  • Urdu digits (۰–۹) and English digits both count as words, not as Urdu letters.

Limitations

  • Urdu is sometimes typed without a space after non-joining letters (so two words look separate but are stored as one). Those are counted as one word, because there is no space between them.
  • Words joined with a hyphen or slash, such as “Urdu/English”, count as one word.
